Three Lake Oswego neighbors decided to make an amtrak pilgrimage to their closest major league baseball park Safeco field in Seattle. One was an avid lifetime an LA fan wearing his lucky Dodger jacket.
One anti Steinbrenner ex Yankee fan. The third was much more surrendered without any affiliation looking for the sublime. The primary goal was to put a face and personality to the Mariner/Dodger radio commentaries and morning box scores.
Our ‘want to be hero’s’ faces and forms took shape as they performed their own unique ballet calisthenics in the outfield. Batting styles honed and perfected since little league brought color, character and personality to early morning sports page statistics.
In a game that seemed at first that there were more transient LA Dodger fans than Mariners in the stands for the first three or four innings. Things changed dramatically in between bites of chicken pad and by the sixth inning. The seats were finally filling with some of the more rabid M’s fans starting to drown out the Dodger blue.
Suddenly Millwoods Babe Ruths full figured form was gone and a possie of middle inning closers marched to the mound in the winter like late innings. The evening chills melted as every seat was occupied by a seasoned radio announcer aged 10 to 99 where shouting deep wisdom to Lueke, Kelly, Prior, League and Willhelmson.
A pacific crowd united in a sea of waving arms, oooing mouths in delightful surprise. Each out, each pitch and the eternal space inbetween were chapters in an unfolding historic movie script. Eric the manager wedged each pitcher who put each Dodger to sleep just as the right time. The creshendo reached a high after Wilhelm Son struck out the first two batters strike by strike. Like a great gasps and deep pushes the crowd let out great bursts of sound inbetween dead silence at the ball left the pitchers hand dancing 90 feet into the glove of young ex yankee Montero.
And the Spring Street Center? On Capital Hill sitting just above Safeco we relaxed its serene Queen Ann parlors, the perfect setting to recapture the meaning and purpose of our pilgrimage and America’s game.
